Freeride and Slopestyle Camps with mountain-action.de

Freeride and Slopestyle Camp Obertauern – Win a K2 Sponsorship

Searching für the best allround talents ...

Obertauern, a famous Austrian Skiresort with parks, perfect powderruns and great spot for backcountry kicker, is since many years the location for the mountain-action.de camp during Christmas holidays. For the 3rd year it is promoted by K2. Daniel Schießl, the German K2 Team Coach, will support you in the park and on the kicker with technical and style tips while Andi Neuhauser, an experienced freeride guide, will show you the best powderspots and how to ride savely by using avalanche gear in the outback.
At the end of the week the best allround talent on ski and on snowboard will win a K2 "local hero" sponsorship for one year.
Beside that every participant will get a K2 starter package and can test the new K2 skis and snowboards.
We would be very happy to welcome young riders from all over the world to our camp. And don´t forget Obertauern is also famous for cool partys.

Some information:

Krippenstein – Freeride and Slopestyle Camp

Krippenstein – for insiders one of the best ski resorts in the middle alps!

Our homebase is on top of the mountain just 100 meter away from a small but nice shaped park with its own little chairlift. Since Warren Miller came here in 2006 to film the fantastic backcountry with its insane cliffs and pillow lines with Pep Fujas and Michelle Parker this spot is famous amoung the international freeride community.

This camp is also supported by K2 with coaches from the team who assist in the park, on the kickers and in the backcountry. Every participant will get a K2 starter package and can test the latest K2 skis and snowboards.

The CAIC Benefit Bash-A Huge Success!

The Colorado Avalanche Information Center (CAIC) was feeling a major cash shortage this year because of budget cuts; these cuts expected to have a crippling effect on backcountry avalanche forecasts this winter, unless money was raised! But thanks to the support of sponsors, and locals, the CAIC Benefit Bash was a huge success! The bash was a fundraiser, put on by the Colorado Avalanche Information Center with the goal of raising enough money to continue with field operations and provide avi forecasts throughout the springtime. The fundraiser was held at the Riverwalk Center in Breckenridge, CO a little over a week ago. Between 500-600 people attended, over $26,000 was raised. Plans for next year's bash is already in the works! To read more about the center, check out their website at avalanche.state.co.us/

This past Saturday was premier party in Östersund, Sweden with the K2 Chopper being a very special guest. Check out the teaser and K2 teamrider Mårten Bergkvist´s part in "Make my Day". It will make your day then. Hopefully.
PS: it´s supposed to start dumping on Thursday this week in the alps, so most likely the K2 offices will be closed for intense ski testing...which will make our day. For sure.

So being an office brat means one has a lot of time to kill. Surfing on the internet during my lunch break I realized it started snowing outside, so I checked the local mountain webcams of Garmisch.
It really did snow!!
Zugspitze seems to be in a major whiteout but on Wank (trust me THAT is the name of this mountain, for real!!) it looks like about 20 to 30cm fresh snow.
SWEET!

K2 Skis Pink Chase powered by POLAR

OCTOBER 22nd-26th 2008
2nd STOP OF THE GLOBAL FUNDRAISER AT THE SCHECK TESTIVAL STUBAI / AUSTRIA

24.000 participants enjoyed the perfect weather conditions at the Scheck Testival at Stubai glacier. Besides of testing the all new skiing gear, many female guests helped our K2 Alliance Team to fullfill their important mission:
To collect 100.000 verticals with skiing and hence donating up to 10.000 Euros to breast cancer research foundations!

Each participator of the K2 Skis Pink Chase fundraiser received a POLAR AXN300 Outdoor Computer for the duration of the test, to collect all the skied vertical meters. At the end, all meters are summed up and converted into Euros. For every 10 meters skied, K2 will donate one Euro to the breast cancer foundations (Brustkrebs Deutschland e.V. and Krebsliga Schweiz).

Further details and information on the total amount of verticals on <a href="http://www.k2skis.com/pinkchase"target="_blank">www.k2skis/pinkchase.com

K2 Skis Pink Chase

Blue Skis and bullet-proof snow, perfect conditions for the Alliance members to rack up as much vertical as possible. At 9am on Friday, October 31st, the 10 Alliance members in pink wigs and white matching jackets from the U.S and Canada waited patiently for first chair at A-Basin, CO, the start of the Pink Chase and their ski season!

The gals took advantage of the vacant slopes in the early morning hours and logged a considerable number of laps. Most of the gals surpassed the expected 17,000 vertical feet. At the end of the four hours, the girls had earned an estimated $11,500 for Breast Cancer Research, combining one-time online donations, online pledges, and cash donations from the event.

The A-Basin locals provided additional amusement and support with the creative Halloween costumes, and cash donations. The main highlight of the event was the male college student with a ribbon tattoo on his back; validating that breast cancer affects all people, not just women. Thanks to everyone who contributed; your generosity made this event a success!

go that way!, that is Gasherbrum 2 on the right, tri-angular looking thing

After a six hour slog to camp one we would get some rest, spend the night and head back to Base Camp. Hang out a few days and then head back up and onto camp two. Then to camp three. Up and down. That is the name of the game for most high altitude climbing, sounds fun eh!

Camp 1, looking at Gasherbrum 2

Moving up we were lucky to nail the weather. It was nice while we cruised higher to each camp and then snowed while we rested in Base Camp. This was the trend until the end. After setting up camp 3 and heading back to Base Camp we felt strong and ready for some skiing. It was then that our weather forecast began to sizzle out. Bad weather was coming and our window to summit was closing in. After a group discussion we left Base Camp at midnight and headed up. Arriving at 23,000ft, camp 3, we settled in to prepare for the summit push. Again midnight was our departure time and we headed out. The snow started falling and didn't stop. Climbing for about six hours the storm continued to get worse and it was obvious that we should turn around. Getting stuck at 24,500ft would not be good. A hard decsicion to make, but it was the right one.

Getting shut down!

Now at camp 3 we were stuck. The snow began to pummel the tents and didn't let up for three days. We had two tents that were made for two people but had three in each tent, made for a tight three days. Not only was the weather harmmering us down we were also feeling the effects of being at 23,000 ft for the last few days. Shovelling every few hours to keep the tent from disappearing. Rough times.

Camp 3 below the summit. 174 Anti-Piste with Dynafit bindings. This set up is the best/lightest I have found for ski mountaineering.

Finally the weather broke and it was time to get! We were running low on food and energy levels. A bummer that we could not go higher but that's climbing, it doesn't always work out. All the snow had us spooked but we snuck in a few turns on the way down.

Kip Garre in Gasherbrum 2 Part 1

Gasherbrum 2, Pakistan

After having knee surgery in Febuary I spent all my time trying to get back, I wanted to be as fit as I was before I was hurt. I also had lots of time trying to find a solution for spring/summer ski fix. Searching for spring trips I was able to jump aboard a ski expediton to Pakistan to attempt to ski Gasherbrum 2, the worlds 13th highest peak.

Gasherbrum 2 is located in Pakistan at the head of the Baltoro glacier near K2, Broad Peak and Trango Towers. This is a region that I have always wanted to visit so I was really excited about this opportunity and trained my ass off to get ready.

Our group consisted of mostly North Face Athletes. Kris Erickson, John Griber, Hillaree O'neil and Ingrid Backstrom. Kim Havell and myself rounded the crew out.

Leaving the states for Islamabad, Pakistan, had most of us were curious about what to expect. I have to say that we all felt safe and truly enjoyed our time there both on the way in and the way out. From Islamabad we flew to Skardu, the gateway town to the Karakoram mountains. A few days here to prepare for the next seven weeks and we were off. From Skardu it was an eight hour jeep ride to Askole where we would begin our trek in. The jeep ride to Askole was out of hand! The gnarliest roads I have ever been on. Our drivers were so skilled, confident and smooth.

Here is a school bus in Skardu. Right now there is a popular book out about a climber, Greg Mortensen, and his quest to build schools in this area of the world. Three Cups Of Tea, I would recommend it. Many of the schools we saw on our way to Askole were built by Greg.

Askole was the end of the road and where we began to hike. Askole is also where we met our porters for the first time. We had lots of gear and about 90 porters to carry it all, that's right 90 porters. Over the last few years tourism has suffered here and I was told that usually 250 trekking and expedition group leave Askole every summer, this year only 85 or so were scheduled. This meant less work for the porters which in turn provided an interesting start to our trip. As our Sirdar, the leader of our porters, was picking out or porters for the trek things got crazy. Porters began hopping the fence and grabbing our gear. Not knowing what was going on we all tried to grab what we could in the frenzy. When things settled down we learned that no one was trying to steal our gear but felt that by grabbing bags they would be entitle to work. All are gear arrived by base camp minus a few food boxes, not to bad.

Lots of Gear!!
Porters waiting to be called on for work, right before the kaos.

About 85 miles to base camp, eight days of hiking in through the Baltoro glacier. The Baltoro is amazing. It is the largest glacier outside of the poles and is home to the highest concentration of 8000 meter peaks anywhere.

Left for dead, horse on the Baltoro

Looking up the Baltoro toward the Trangos.

Once we got to base camp and settled in we began to shuttle gear up through the ice fall to camp 1,2,3. We established a route through the ice fall to camp one, set a camp there that would remain until we left. This way we could bring more gear to camp one to set up camps 2 and 3. By the time we left I had traveled through the ice fall six time, yea!!

Season started... Kaunertal Opening

The season over here in middle europe definitely started, we got some snow, enough for the glacier parks to open, and we had some beautiful bluebird days on the Hintertux and Kaunertal glaciers.

The Kaunertal Opening took place this weekend, which is always kind of the official season start. There was a pro competition on Saturday, and I can proudly say that Maxine Boehme, german K2 rider, won the girls comp with a nice 360 and a 720 at the super icy not easy kickers, congratulations Maxi!!!

The other pictures are from the Hintertux glacier, where photographer Christoph Schoech and I decided to spend a lot of time getting the perfect hand drag shot, the ones you can see are not even the best!

Hunting Yeti Webisode 5

Well that's it, that's all. Oh just kidding, but this is the fifth and final webisode of Nimbus Independent's Hunting Yeti series. Hopefully everybody enjoyed our new format and distribution method of five webisodes and one feature film. The fifth webisode caps off a truly amazing and monumental year for the Nimbus Crew.

This feature is a little different from the previous four. Eric was busy editing the "Hunting Yeti" film, Andy was still recovering from oral surgery and our cinematographers had to get summer jobs. So this episode is a compilation of solo missions.

Chris Benchetler starts off traveling to Australia to chase Kangaroo's with Sirianni, providing some good lifestyle and a little action. Meanwhile, Pep grabbed the other camera and headed for Argentina. Here Pep hooks up with Dash and Garrett and gets the goods while working at South America Snow Sessions. Capping off the webisode is friend Sammy Carlson and his footage in New Zealand.

The webisodes are also available for free as iPod and HD computer downloads. You can find it all on our producer's page at www.rip.tv/nimbusindependent. These downloads are FREE, all one has to do is create a profile with a username and password on Rip.Tv. The download versions have additional footage, different edits and are of higher quality. Watch it full screen on your computer and feel free to share it with your friends. Look for "Hunting Yeti – The Film" which is currently available on DVD at local shops or can be purchased online at: Evogear.com and poorboyzstore.com.

"Hunting Yeti" is presented by K2 Skis and produced by Nimbus Independent in association with Poor Boyz Productions. Nimbus Independent is a group of liked minded friends trying to share a new perspective on film making and skiing. Please buy the DVD and support the cause so we can do it again next year.

Captain K2 for President

Voters: Fed up with endless Washington jargon, lipstick jokes, mangled syntax and incomplete predicates? Now there's an alternative you can live with—cheer, even—Captain K2 has joined the race and he needs your support!

Actually, thanks to newly-adopted electoral rules, eligible voters this year will be allowed to vote (k)twice: One time only for one of the "major party" candidates, and as many times as you can pull the lever! for the ONLY candidate who can guarantee a MAJOR PARTY wherever he shows up.

With his illiterative slogan "one notch too tight" pretty well suggesting just how far he's willing to go to deserve your votes (early and often, puh-lease!), The Captain knows that you'll probably be voting for one of those Irish candidates (McCain/O'Bama), and he's got no problem with that. He would, however, like to make a few suggestions to their campaign management about THEIR slogans, which The Captain feels approach, but fail to hit, the mark.

"The McCain camp's tapped a nerve, as far as they go, with ‘Country First', but they're clearly missing a much broader international audience of skiers. How's this, instead: ‘Cross-country First, then Alpine, and then Tele for some real fun!' It's so obvious I'm surprised they haven't expanded their message by now!"

For O'Bama supporters, the Kaped Krusader offers this timely suggestion, perhaps with an eye toward recent Wall Street turmoil: "'Change We Can Believe In' kinda draws you in, I'll agree. But they should turn it around, make it more of an active sentence, like a demand: ‘We Could Use Some Change!' Maybe post those signs outside of ski area ticket windows and stuff like that to really rile people up ... I mean, not everyone can afford a season pass, can they? Or lunch, for that matter ... ."

The Captain's upcoming Debate Schedule, available soon, will include such diverse luminaries as the owner/operator of a geothermal spa in Iceland, a major Detroit Demo Van customizer, and The Country of France.

As he travels the country spreading his peculiar brand of good will (and hitting the occasional dry-cleaner to keep that snazzy suit in tip-top shape), Captain K2 is protected 24/7 (well, 23/7 ... even he needs a little "me" time) by highly-trained volunteers from the Spread Eagles, a world-famous ski/motorcycle gang, best-known for high-speed spectacles and spectacular aerial hi-jinks. Look for the entourage at a shopping center near you (and just try to snap a picture!).

And finally: Don't forget to vote! The Ski World is counting on you!
This is Thomas, but we call him Tom, or Ötzi, which you probably won´t understand. But that´s ok as all you need to know is that he´s THE tuning guru at K2 Europe.
Without his help and support we wouldn´t get the results we are getting every year. And this year actually more than ever!
Tom lives in Sölden in the Ötztal (or Ötz-valley) and runs our K2 testcenter up on the glacier. He´s a great guy, and if you ever go there make sure you give him the credits he deserves!

Both qualified in the Friday qualification (PK 1., Aleksander 4.), and they were going big in Saturday´s night crossover session where snowboarding, skateboarding, FMX and freeskiing competed against each other, in the end PK got second (he had the highest score for the whole three days until Jacob Wester got a 96.25 score, PK´s was 96.00).
PK´s tricks were cork 7´s, massive doublecorked 10´s and a 12, with a highmute grab, and Aleksander threw down lovely rodeo 5 bow and arrow grab, rodeo 9´s, double frontflips and switch 9´s, but its hard to describe it in words, so just check out the pictures (thanks to partymachine and photographer Christoph Schoech).
And if you haven´t seen enough check out the links below or www.freestyle.ch.

Freestyle.CH Event Report

This was the first appearance of the K2 Chopper in Europe, and it was a blast! After loading the bike in the van our crew took off for the trip to Zurich. There the bike was unloaded and displayed at the K2 booth in the label-world of Freestyle.ch. Friday took off with some photosessions of the bike, and also qualification for PK and Aleksander, who both made it to the finals with PK leading the pack. Saturday again brought some more photo sessions, and also some signature hours where our K2 Snowboarding friends Ursina Haller, Colin Frey and Danny Larsen joined in. Sunday´s finals put PK again on first place, thus qualifying him for the Superfinal, and Aleksander got an impressíve 6th place. Not too bad for "only" being invited as a rookie...In the Superfinals luck was not on PK´s side and he got beat by Jacob Wester (who was always second before), but only by 1,25 points. Check out PK´s qualification run, the slideshow of the event and the chopper blog for all pics of the photo seesions.
